Where is Barbara Fields when you need her?

In a dumpy convenience store in Over-the-Rhine, I was standing behind a couple of pitiful lottery-players, waiting to buy my daily twelve-pack of Natty Light.  One guy comes up to the counter with two cans of iced tea, and tries to say something in Hindi to the racially ambiguous woman who is always manning the counter.  He says the phrase a few more times, and she doesn’t respond.

“You don’t understand that?  You don’t understand what I’m saying?”

“You Indian, right?”

“You’re from India though.”

“No, I’m black.”

“You’re not black!”

“I’m from Ethiopia.”

“Oh, damn, you’re black!  Ethiopian, you’re blacker than I am!”

“That’s right.”

As Patti Smith once said, “the blackest thing in Harlem is white.”

This is so hilariously poignant I don’t know where to begin. I’ll just say, thanks.
